John Knowles was born in 1884 in Montclair, New Jersey. John was known in particular for his drypoint etching portraits and his magazine cover illustrations. Knowles began doing covers in 1918, just after the outbreak of war against Germany. Taking his specialty of depicting woman in various activities, Hare created idealistic scenes of women engaging in the war effort in a rather romantic way. Cover artist had to discover a way to represent the war effort without becoming too literal. Through the covers of The Saturday Evening Post, John successfully placed beautiful, demure woman in roles with the Red Cross, christening ships, and learning to make their coupons stretch as far as possible while also reminding the public in subtle ways what we were fighting to ensure. Hare completed twelve covers for the Post between 1918 and 1925. John died in 1947 at the age of sixty three.
