FIRST-EVER TRAVELING ROCKWELL
EXHIBIT BROKE ATTENDANCE RECORDS ACROSS THE COUNTRY
A comprehensive retrospective of the man and his art,
"Norman Rockwell: Pictures for the American People" set
attendance records at museums throughout the United States, delighting
his old fans and introducing a whole new generation to his genius. Over
70 of Norman Rockwell's original canvasses plus 323 of his Saturday
Evening Post illustrations were displayed. This Ford
Foundation sponsored exhibit ran from November 1999 through March of
2002. Media attention illuminated the renewed public
interest including artists in Time, Newsweek,
Vanity Fair, People, Southern
Living, The New York Times, The
Boston Globe and USA Today (who
gave extensive coverage to this significant event). Both NBC and
CBS spotlighted Norman Rockwell in recent months; and PBS premiered a
new 90-minute documentary on his life, narrated in part by Steven
Spielberg, a devoted collector of Rockwell art and board member of the
Norman Rockwell Museum at Stockbridge, MA. The first stop of the tour,
Atlanta's High Museum of Art, drew over 240,000 people.
Other Rockwell Tour stops include: The
Chicago Historical Society Museum; The Corcoran Gallery of Art,
Washington, D.C.; The San Diego Museum of Art; The Phoenix Art Museum;
The Norman Rockwell Museum, Stockbridge, MA; Solomon R. Guggenheim
Museum, New York, NY. |
